The Asia Peace and Education Foundation is a not for profit charity that supports innovative education and child focussed programs in Burma/Myanmar
The Asia Peace and Education Foundation (APEF) has grown out of a creative partnership between a small group of individuals committed to education in Myanmar (both local and international) as well as a growing network of Monastic Education schools. Internationally, APEF has formal and informal links with a number of centres for higher learning including: the Australian National University in Canberra , Victoria University in Melbourne and the Burnet Institute for Medical Research and Public Health, all situated in Australia; the University of Notre Dame and the University of Washington in the United States of America. Over the past two years APEF has established itself as an indigenous NGO based within the Monastic Education system, under the patronage of two influential Buddhist Monks, both Secretaries of their respective Divisions.
About
Our belief is that education can truly bring about positive change in Burma, both for individuals and society. Our goal is to learn about education needs through effective and practical research and, with a solid evidence base, to support innovative educational programs implemented primarily through the Monastic Education system and non-formal education programs for particularly vulnerable groups of children such as children who spend most of their time on the street and working children. We do this through:
- Teacher training
- Planning and implementation of innovative programs
- Upgrading of educational facilities Creating opportunities for disadvantaged students to attend school
- Research into education needs and solutions.
We have raised over $500,000 to support school rebuilding and teacher training following Cyclone Nargis and are continuing to implement programs in the affected areas of Ayerawaddy Delta. To date:
- Over 50 teachers have been trained in child-centred approaches to learning
- Over 30 school principals and administrators have been trained in the development of effective school management and financial systems
- Over 4,000 children have benefited from new school buildings and school materials and, in particular, better trained teachers and a more exciting learning environment
You can help us to continue to provide this much needed assistance to the ongoing reconstruction of the Ayerawaddy Delta area.
