APEF was established in Melbourne, Australia in 2007 and has grown from a creative partnership of a small group of individuals committed to education in Myanmar. Internationally, APEF has formal and informal links with a number of centres for higher learning including: the Australian National University in Canberra , Victoria University in Melbourne and the Burnet Institute for Medical Research and Public Health, all situated in Australia; the University of Notre Dame and the University of Washington in the United States of America. In Myanmar APEF partners with a range of non-government education providers. These include parts of the Monastic Education System (the second largest education provider in the country with over 2,000) schools); other faith based organisations; and local and international non-government organisations (NGOs). APEF is registered as a small not-for-profit charity in Australia and has the institutional support of Global Development Australia. Following the devastation caused by Cyclone Nargis that hit Myanmar in May 2008, APEF has been able to establish a small office in Yangon (Rangoon), with one of its partners, Phaung Daw Oo Monastic Education School.
